Limitations

What Markdown cannot carry, and what changes on a round trip.

Markdown has fewer concepts than a Tiptap document. Import and export are built so that a document that came from Markdown exports to Markdown that imports to the same document. Going the other way, from an arbitrary Tiptap document through Markdown and back, loses whatever Markdown cannot express. This page lists those cases.

Lost on export

  • Attributes. Only the attributes that have a Markdown form are written: heading level, ordered list start, task item checked, code block language, link href and title, image src, alt and title. Everything else, such as textAlign or an id, is dropped.
  • Unknown marks. Marks other than bold, italic, strike, code, link, underline, subscript and superscript are dropped; their text is kept.
  • Unknown nodes. With the default policy only their children are written. A leaf such as mention disappears. See Unknown nodes.
  • Code block language. Only the first word of language is written.
  • Trailing hard breaks and whitespace at the end of a paragraph are not written, since Markdown would drop them anyway.
use tiptap_rusty_markdown::{from_markdown, to_markdown, Document};

let doc = Document::from_json_str(r#"{"type":"doc","content":[
    {"type":"paragraph","attrs":{"textAlign":"center"},"content":[
        {"type":"text","text":"hi","marks":[{"type":"highlight"}]}]}
]}"#)?;
let md = to_markdown(&doc);
assert_eq!(md, "hi\n");

let back = from_markdown(&md).to_value()?;
assert_eq!(back, serde_json::json!({"type":"doc","content":[
    {"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"hi"}]}]}));

HTML does not come back as marks

Export writes underline, subscript and superscript as inline HTML (<u>, , ), hard breaks inside table cells as <br>, complex tables as an HTML <table>, and unknown nodes as HTML under UnknownNodePolicy::Html. Import never creates nodes or marks from HTML. With the default HtmlPolicy::Text, that HTML comes back as literal text; with HtmlPolicy::Drop it is removed.

use tiptap_rusty_markdown::{from_markdown, to_markdown, Document};

let doc = Document::from_json_str(r#"{"type":"doc","content":[{"type":"paragraph","content":[
    {"type":"text","text":"under","marks":[{"type":"underline"}]}]}]}"#)?;
let md = to_markdown(&doc);
assert_eq!(md, "<u>under</u>\n");

let back = from_markdown(&md).to_value()?;
assert_eq!(back["content"][0]["content"][0]["text"], "<u>under</u>");

Tables

  • GFM tables always have a header row. Export writes the first row as the header, so a table without tableHeader cells comes back with its first row as tableHeader.
  • Column alignment is not imported, and export always writes --- separators.
  • Cells with more than one paragraph, block content such as lists, or a colspan or rowspan above 1 are exported as an HTML table, which imports as text.
use tiptap_rusty_markdown::{from_markdown, to_markdown, Document};

let doc = Document::from_json_str(r#"{"type":"doc","content":[{"type":"table","content":[
    {"type":"tableRow","content":[
        {"type":"tableCell","content":[{"type":"paragraph","content":[{"type":"text","text":"a"}]}]}]}]}]}"#)?;
let back = from_markdown(&to_markdown(&doc)).to_value()?;
assert_eq!(back["content"][0]["content"][0]["content"][0]["type"], "tableHeader");

Changed on import

  • Soft line breaks become a single space. The original line wrapping is not kept.
  • Bare URLs without angle brackets, such as https://tiptap.dev or www.tiptap.dev, stay plain text. Only <https://…> autolinks become links.
  • Mixed task lists, where only some items have [ ] or [x], stay normal lists with the markers as text. An ordered task list loses its start.
  • Image-only paragraphs become block-level image nodes. See Images.
  • Very deep nesting beyond max_depth is flattened. See Nesting depth.
  • Raw HTML is kept as text or dropped, never parsed.

Not supported

These Markdown extensions are not enabled. Their syntax is parsed as ordinary CommonMark, so it comes through as text or as the plain blocks it happens to resemble:

  • footnotes
  • math
  • metadata blocks (front matter)
  • definition lists
  • GFM alerts (> [!NOTE])
