Inspect

Read a document through the tree, the preview, the JSON source and the inspector.

Selecting nodes

Click a row in the tree or a block in the preview to select that node. The tree, the preview and the inspector always show the same selection. With the tree or preview focused, the arrow keys walk the document:

KeyAction
↑ / ↓Previous / next visible node
←Collapse the node, or jump to its parent
→Expand the node, or step into its first child
Home / EndFirst / last node
EscClear the selection

The preview

The preview renders paragraphs, headings, lists, blockquotes, code blocks and rules, with bold, italic, underline, strike, code and link marks. Images show as a placeholder with their src. A node type the app does not recognise renders as a dashed amber block with its type name, and you can still select and edit it like any other node.

The JSON source

Source in the toolbar (⌘3, Ctrl+3 on Windows and Linux) replaces the preview with the document's pretty-printed JSON, with line numbers. It stays in sync with the selection both ways: selecting a node highlights its lines and scrolls to them, and clicking a line selects the deepest node on it. The source view is read-only; edit through the tree, the inspector or Edit JSON.

The inspector

The inspector shows the selected node in sections:

  • Identity: the node type, its index path (for example doc › 2 › 0) and a summary of its content.
  • Text: for text nodes, an editor for the text. The change is applied when the field loses focus.
  • Attributes: one editor per attribute, chosen by value type. Strings get a text field, numbers a stepper, booleans a switch, and objects or arrays a JSON text area. Remove an attribute with its remove button, or add one by key.
  • Marks: for text nodes, a chip per mark: bold, italic, underline, strike, code, link, plus any other mark already on the node. Click a chip to toggle the mark. Mark attributes are editable. To add another mark, give its type and optionally one attribute; typing link as the type pre-fills the key href.
  • Structure: insert, wrap and move nodes. See Editing.
  • JSON: the node's own fields as JSON (children are summarised, not expanded), and a button that copies the full node. Edit JSON opens the complete node for editing.
  • Schema: when a schema is loaded, the problems on this node. See Schema validation.

Key order and unknown fields are preserved exactly as they appear in the file.
